Inverter Based ACs vs. Regular Air Conditioners: Which One Is Better?

Inverter Based ACs vs. Regular Air Conditioners: Which One Is Better?

Many people got of their perfectly serviceable regular units and swapped them with DC inverter technology equipped ones. But does the Inverter premise deliver as per expectations?

 Let us find out:

DC Inverter Technology

These ACs have been touted as the next big thing. They are lighter, quieter and consume less electricity than their regular AC counterparts. However, they are much more expensive, and the price difference becomes steeper as you increase the British thermal units (BTU) capacity of the AC.

A DC inverter operates just like the accelerator of your car. When you want more power you press the accelerator and your car surges forward. Similarly, easing on the paddle slows down your vehicle.

A DC inverter equipped compressor is always on, yet it consumes much less power in relation to its regular counterpart. It self-adjusts according to the temperature outside and works to ensure that the room’s temperature is the same as shown on the thermostat monitor. Once the room cools down sufficiently, the compressor slows down as well, till it senses that the room is heating up again and it increases its cooling capacity, accordingly.

This results in much higher efficiency and correspondingly lower power bills. Apart from that, the compressor is fully digitalized, and it hums very quietly whenever the AC is on.  The lack of an on/off cycle decreases the wear and tear on the unit. This results in a longer lifespan of your appliance and less trips to the AC repair and service center.

Regular Air Conditioner

It is an age-old design in which the compressor is either on or off. Whenever it is on, it will automatically work at full capacity and therefore use the amount of electricity it has been designed to consume.

Once the room is as cool as the temperature level of the thermostat, the compressor will stop while the AC’s main blower fan will continue to operate.  As soon as the temperature starts to increase, the compressor will restart again. This is a noisy cycle and you will be able to distinctly hear the sound of it restarting or stopping. If the room temperature is close to the temperature outside, this cycle will be repeated very rapidly.

Each time the compressor starts, it uses its full power and therefore uses a lot of electricity which significantly decreases its energy efficiency. However, regular compressors are easy to maintain, and service as compared to their considerably delicate and sophisticated inverter counterparts.  They are more mechanical than electronic and can be easily fixed or replaced by a skilled technician.

Conversely, the DC inverter equipped AC is not that easy to repair in case of a breakdown, and its malfunctioning parts will have to be replaced instead of repaired.

Conclusion

Both of these AC types fulfill their own niche. We at Rite Temp HVAC  have plenty of experience in maintaining and servicing all kinds of split and window based ACs. Just give us a call and we will have your AC up and running in no time at all.
